May & June 2022: Terza Parte

This is the post to read about travel tips and delicious eats.

Naples & Mount Vesuvius.

If you haven’t caught on yet, Naples was one of my favorite stops for food and culture in Europe. I couldn’t get enough of the wine, pizza, pasta, and gelato in Italy! And Spain wasn’t far behind. I close this blog series with 5 tips for traveling in Europe and 10 top eats from my trip.

Travel tips you oughta know about.

Before you get on the plane to try out my food recommendations, here’s some tips to make your travels smoother—

#1 Stay at AirB&Bs. These accommodations are a great value, and they make you feel at home, like a local. The really good AirB&B hosts will tell you where’s the best attractions and restaurants. That was a major plus for me.

#2 Ride the bus between cities. I think the train is usually the best option, but sometimes your next destination does not have a reliable route. The bus is cheap and fast for going places less than 500 miles away, and the views can be breathtaking.

#3 Save time with luggage storage. Major train stations and destinations have easy-to-use luggage storage. For a few Euros you can store, your luggage in a locker and then see a landmark or two. I found this helpful for making the most of my travel days between cities.

A pitstop at the Leaning Tower of Pisa, when I was on my way from Florence to Genoa. I hopped off the train, stored my luggage, snapped pictures, and then hopped back on the next train.

#4 Allow yourself extra time. Things don’t always go to plan, and businesses and people just move at a slower pace in Mediterranean cities. Also keep in mind that Google Maps tends to underestimate walking times. My advice is give yourself 30 minutes longer than you think it will take to move from one activity to another.

#5 Reflect and make notes for next time. Were there items you wished you had packed? Are you inspired to explore a few places more in-depth? Write these thoughts down! Then you’ll have an even more amazingly excellent time on your next trip.

The best food in Europe.

Without further ado, here’s my top 10 food experiences—-

#1 Gelatodamare Trieste. Best ice cream I’ve had. Ever. Period.

I had scoops, and then came back the next day for specialty ice cream sandwiches.

#2 Trattoria Castel Nuovo (Naples). Epic meal with a bottle of wine, Neapolitan fish, house liquor, and lemony dessert.

#3 Pizzeria e Trattoria Regina Vittoria (Naples). Pizza with friarielli (like broccoli) sourced from the ashen, acidic soil of Mount Vesuvius. The pizza had fresh buffalo mozzarella, olive oil, and sausage too. I still salivate at the thought of having this one.

#4 Bar Bodega Quimet (Barcelona). Best tapas I had in Spain. Only problem was that I was envious of all the yummy-looking food at the tables next to mine. #FOMO

You can’t go wrong with fresh octopus and ham.

#5 Cannaregio food tour (Jewish Ghetto, Venice). Not much of the food was Jewish, or kosher, but I loved the triangle sandwiches, ink squid pasta, and spritz wine. We even had tiramisu and grappa. Take the tour with Silvia!

#6 Lascar 74 (Barcelona). Authentic ceviche and potatas bravas. You have to experience these dishes in Spain (although this restaurant was fusion-Peruvian). I can still taste the pisco sour.

#7 Príncipe do Calhariz (Lisbon). Soupy seafood, the must-have if you visit Spain or Portugal. It’s even better than paella—which I also had.

#8 Le Scuderie dell’Astronauta (Genoa). An astronaut-themed restaurant with homestyle Italia cooking and warm ambiance. I had a typical pasta, wine, tiramisu combination. (Sorry, I didn’t take pictures!)

#9 Plaza de la Alegría Praça (Lisbon). Where I had my pork cheek sandwich on crispy, crunchy bread. You can find this kind of street food at Lisbon’s many markets and parks.

#10 Antigua Casa de Guardia (Málaga). Andalusia is known for its sweet wines. So I did plenty of wine tasting in the old city quarter of Málaga. Moscatel (a floral sherry) was my favorite. I definitely want to go back to Spain just for the wine, seafood, and fruit that’s sold in this ancient port city.
